Instead the individual ordinand steps forward into a period of silence, receiving their ordination as an inner and self-directed movement.ĭuring this second half of our history, in 2011, we changed our name to One Spirit Interfaith Foundation, indicating our wish to maintain connection with our USA colleagues as they too evolved their identity. In essence the ordination was no longer conferred by the single central teacher. In parallel the conceptual underpinnings of ordination made a significant shift. In this period we learnt – literally and symbolically – that the essence of the teaching that this training was expressing was not dependent on any one person, and that it could be delivered authentically and in ever-evolving ways by a cohesive faculty working in different parts of the UK. This meant, most significantly, that the teaching was now led by more than one central teacher. This period could be described as the democratising of our organisation: the leadership base widened, most clearly evidenced in the training being offered now not only in London but in Manchester, Edinburgh and near Gloucester too. When the founder leaves, change is inevitable as the organisation recalibrates its position and potential. In 2004 we became a registered charity, operating under English law as an educational trust.Įvolving philosophical concepts of 'the teacher' and 'the ordination' In 2002 we changed our name to The Interfaith Seminary, echoing changes taking place within our colleagues in the USA. Now known as Miranda Macpherson, she teaches and leads spiritual retreats around the world. Miranda stepped out of the Seminary’s leadership in 2006. The first two year programme to train interfaith ministers and spiritual counsellors in the UK was launched in October 1996 in London with the first Ordination held in 1998.Īs our organisation’s leader for its first 10 years, Miranda developed a steady growth in student numbers recruited a talented team of faculty and visiting speakers and led the development of new teaching methods and materials. With the support of the USA school and others, Miranda was inspired to open The New Seminary in the United Kingdom. In the mid 1990’s the founder of our UK organisation, Miranda Macpherson (then Holden) undertook the USA training. ![]() ![]() Years later Diane Berk, a core part of the New Seminary faculty, founded the Interfaith Seminary, also in New York. The New Seminary arose from this inspiration, enabling others to come and develop within this intention. Together with others, Rabbi Gelberman was inspired to support the exploration of how diverse religious and spiritual leaders might together serve the true needs of the world. The OneSpirit Interfaith Foundation’s origins go back to 1981 when The New Seminary was founded in New York, USA by Rabbi Joseph Gelberman. It was fun to watch for all of the "detailed" items presented in the beginning, to see when they would pop up and how they would tie together. This forced brand of comedy falls flat, and the end credits begin to roll before any real traction is had. The comedy is - and I'm guessing here - meant to come from the absurd situations the characters are presented with, as opposed to finding absurdity in realistic situations. Maguire seems numb to it all, as does most of this cast. The Details forgoes any real attempt at characterization - or even comedy for that matter - and instead over-stuffs all of these plot contrivances one on top of the other. Oh yeah, then there is an unexpected pregnancy. Then there is a sub-plot where Jeff's pal Lincoln (Dennis Haysbert) is in need of a kidney transplant. Jeff also gets caught up messing around with his good friend's wife (Kerry Washington) and the husband (Ray Liotta) plans on extorting him. One thing leads to another and hilarity ensues, right? To smooth over the construction, he is forced to appease his crazy cat-lady neighbor played by Laura Linney, who has no shame in grabbing a quick paycheck with this performance. She tells him to just landscape without sod but he's on a mission. Maguire is Jeff, married to Nealy (Elizabeth Banks), and he obsesses daily about the raccoons tearing up his yard. How is that possible? Watch The Details to see how a great cast can be reduced by addition. ![]() ![]() Sadly, there is not much comedy in a film full of good actors having lots of fun. We are shown a bottle of poison, a plate of cheese and salami, a kidney and a plant from Trader Joe's - among a few other items - and we are told that these seemingly insignificant items factor in to the "something bad" that has happened. Maguire's voice-over tells us that we often obsess over the details when we look back on something that went bad, wishing we could have done something different. It begins like a murder-mystery, where we know something bad has happened and someone is about to hit the rewind button to show us how we got there. Be careful what you wish for in The Details. ![]() “If usage meets our expectations, it will continue to grow.If mergers and acquisitions are any indication of future trends, it looks like the car-sharing sector could be on track for massive growth. “I think it’s going to be a nice option for our members that are traveling into Los Angeles,” Shields said. Operations also launched recently at airports in New York, San Jose, Atlanta, Austin, Texas, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Palm Beach, Fla., and Toronto. Jeff Shields, ZipCar’s general manager for the Los Angeles market, said moving into airports was a logical next step. The company also folds in the cost of gas and insurance into the rate. The company owns its fleet, but the options tend to have a bit more character than the typical rental: Members can snag models ranging from BMWs to pickup trucks to Mini Coopers. “Įven though ZipCar is now part of Avis, it too appears poised to try to make car rental a more humanizing experience. We compete against the most competitive rates but we can’t always be the lowest. “You are also reinvesting the money in the community you are traveling to. Hubber’s rental rates will not necessarily undercut the bigger companies, but Davis said that’s not the point. The company, which also will launch soon in San Francisco, will take a cut of the profits and make sure the car is insured for the temporary driver. Hubber will ensure the car is clean and has gas when the owner returns to LAX. ![]() Meanwhile, Hubber will seek a renter to use the car while the person is out of town. They’ll then take a shuttle bus to the terminal and catch their flight. If all goes according to plan, starting later this month customers will take their cars to an airport parking facility near LAX. Hubber’s success likely will hinge on how many Angelenos decide to list their cars with the company, which promises to make the process as easy as possible. You find that demographic more accepting of a shared economy. “Younger people are more apt to embrace this now. ![]() “I think it’s kind of a generational shift,” said Paul Davis, the 35-year-old founder of Hubber. Though the new companies have considerable differences in their business models and ownership structures, executives at both suggest they’re more in the car “sharing” business than the car “renting” business. But ZipCar and Hubber could represent a shift in how renters obtain cars. Hubber, which launches May 28, suggests on its website that out-of-towners will soon be able to rent an Audi A4 luxury car for $60 a day.Ĭombined, the two new entrants will be tiny players in the market, which has for decades been the domain of companies with worldwide reach, like Avis and Hertz. The other option is an edgier startup called Hubber, which connects visitors to Los Angeles with residents who want to rent out their cars to make extra money. Earlier this year, Avis Budget Group purchased ZipCar in a deal worth a reported $500 million. Now, members can pick up one of five cars available at the Avis car rental facility near LAX. Usually, ZipCar members search online for available cars and go pick them up from designated parking spots in dense neighborhoods, often driving them for only a few hours at a time. ![]() One is an extension of ZipCar, the car-sharing service popular in many cities, including Los Angeles.
